And so, to create a dialogue between a couple, as a starting point, you can offer Henri Matisse’s painting “Conversation” (fragment). Here is how they write about the picture . At first glance, the picture depicts a rather banal everyday scene: a morning conversation between husband and wife, where he is Matisse himself, and she is the wife of the artist Amelie. Both are easily recognizable, although their features are extremely sketchy. Nevertheless, the analysis of the canvas proves that everything here is far from being so ordinary, since the painting contains a special interpretation of reality. First of all, the rich and deep blue background is not so much the color of the wall as a symbol – the whole idea of space. The significance of blue fascinates and leads the subconscious to the distant depths of the sea, to the water, to peace and quiet, to the source of life – to the one from which everything that exists was born. Green is no less significant – it is the flowering of nature, a symbol of the fertile Earth, and the “Tree of Life” located in the center is, in general, the oldest and unshakable personification of the life cycle. Further, two figures, which also, like signs, embody two principles: male and female. The first is expressed by straight vertical lines, the second is smoothly and whimsically curved. This eternal union gives birth to new life, and it is no accident that there is a tree between them. A kind of bridge connecting a man and a woman is a lattice, which itself consists of straight vertical and streamlined smooth lines. The picture almost completely lacks perspective, and objects are shown by no means as they are in reality. The fact is that for the artist it is not the things themselves that are paramount here, but the relationship between them is their age-old connection, and this idea is so thorough and universal that it leads the consciousness to the very primary sources – to deep primitive antiquity.
For a couple, you can offer only one task. Describe on a piece of paper the dialogue between the people in the picture. After the description is completed, exchange. Talking during this process, both when examining a picture and when describing it, is not allowed. When the description is read, it is important to ask to set the match percentage in the description of the dialogue in the picture.
