The formula for success or how to survive in the fall

Psychosomatics and autumn is a pattern known to all psychologists. And what to do, how to survive, how to save yourself?

Everyone knows the fact that autumn provokes a lot of exacerbations, diseases, immunity drops, activity and motivation decrease, the rhythm of sleep changes: it’s like you are planning to hibernate. What is the reason for this, and how should we, psychologists, help our clients survive in the fall?

Everything works at once:
1. The cold makes us self-preserve and save energy, which must be kept in warm clothes and blankets, and this is a form of struggle. Be that as it may, the body gets tired of this and, of course, breaks down into an infection. Therefore, it makes sense to initially create conditions for warmth and a safe space – the cold will not get you psychologically.
2. Little light, little sun – little happiness. Under the influence of the sun, vitamin D is produced in the body, the “happiness hormone” serotonin and the hormone melatonin are synthesized, which affects human biorhythms. Sunlight has excellent bactericidal properties, killing many bacteria and microbes, so that without the sun, human life would be impossible. Of course we want to cry when he’s gone. As an art therapist, I immediately say: “A lot of color, a lot of yellow, a lot of bright things in the wardrobe will help to cope with this at least a little. A yellow scarf and a green jacket will do the trick.”
3. Summer is gone as if it never happened. No matter how we complain about the summer heat, it does not break bones. And it will take a whole year to wait. Warmth makes it possible to relax, and this is probably one of the reasons why people in hot countries are more smiling and joyful. So in the fall, you need to learn how to relax at any opportunity, this will reduce the level of the depressive component, and give yourself a chance to have a good rest. We walk through the yellow foliage, go to the forest, draw landscapes and play improvisations with colors – such simple conditions will reduce the symptoms of autumn blues.
4. More darkness and less activity – there is little joy in this, but more time for drawing. Yes, it is autumn that takes away our time for full-fledged outdoor activities, but gives us time for creativity. Therefore, now is the time to do artbooking, make collages or take painting lessons. Believe me: this is a chance to create something amazing. After all, autumn is the time for creativity!

Of course, I love summer, but it is in autumn that I create everything unique! Let this autumn become your ally for your new masterpiece!
