Psychosomatics, brain and art therapy

Many already know that psychosomatics is a complex, multifactorial and ambiguous phenomenon. Most classical doctors often send their patients to psychologists and psychotherapists, realizing the fact that treatment in conventional protocols is useless. My practice as a psychologist (25 years) gives me the opportunity to express dubious thoughts that require empirical evidence, but at the same time are important for understanding the practices of psychosomatic psychologists. And today I want to outline my observations about pain.

The brain is a great ally of a psychologist or his most powerful enemy. It is designed in such a way that it constantly evaluates the signals entering it, deciding how serious the danger is and whether immediate action should be taken. Thus, if a psychologist enters dangerous territory with his questions or suggestions of a creative act, you will be notified by pain or its mild form – discomfort in the change of state.

Having received an alarm signal, the brain immediately tries to answer the main question: “How dangerous is this all really?”. And if it is dangerous, the client will definitely not be able to understand what he sees or feels in his drawing or creative product, and will put up pain in defense of integrity. This means that he is not ready to live with a new reality. Therefore, my approach to art therapy is joy and interest, through these emotions it is much easier to penetrate into hidden systems and activate them in a relaxed way, without breaking through protective systems. Interest is stronger than pain. Many important stimuli in our brain leave no room for reactions to pain syndromes. When we are in the euphoria of the interesting, the brain chooses pleasure, not suffering. I think you know this: when we are passionate, we do not get hurt.

In assessing the situation, our central processor uses all the information available to it: from subjective, coming from our past experience, to objective, obtained from the whole complex of physical and chemical parameters of the organism. Our experience – a universal encyclopedia of our automated reactions – provides us with a format for individual perception of the world and, as a result, responses to it. Thus, an event, or even a memory of it, can trigger a multiple pain response, often of the head.

Having received a signal, the brain sends “instructions” to the nerve endings on how to behave. Therefore, in art therapy, we so often meet different forms of different psychosomatic responses to materials. Here are a few examples: working with clay makes you sick – clay is a very physical material, and it can often be assumed that a person has had pains associated with violations of the boundaries of his physical body; colors make you dizzy – because they are unstable and dynamic, it is difficult to keep them under control. This aspect of the response can give the psychologist information that the client’s pain is just a form of self-control that is convenient and understandable to him. And there are a lot of such observations among practitioners of art therapy. But we know that if there is one mechanism, then there is its reverse side, when the creative process removes and minimizes the manifestations of physical pain.
