Drawing projective tests
The most popular in psychology are such tests as the Machover “Draw a Man” test, the Goodenough-Harris “Drawing” test, the “Self-portrait” test in the interpretations of Burns and Reid (Nikitin, 1998).
These techniques make it possible to create a “psychophysical” portrait of individuality based on the recipient’s impressions of his body. Comparison of the structure of character traits identified by the therapist with the carrier’s ideas about the features of his psychophysics expands the boundaries of objective perception of the respondent’s holistic image. Through the analysis of the industry, form and degree of development of muscular and structural stresses depicted on the test image, we are approaching an understanding of the psychological essence of the personality, the relationship of its mental and bodily manifestations.
Unlike diagnostic methods based on verbal assessment, the information content of a projective drawing highlights dysfunctions, which is much more convincing for a person undergoing psychophysical correction than a description of complex speculative models that are not entirely clear and, as a result, not fully accepted by the test person. The reliability of the diagnosis is due to the comparison of tension zones in the drawing and the body, and because of the recipient’s real feeling of discomfort and even pain in different parts of the body.
When working with psychosomatic patients, the use of subsequent drawing tests is recommended.
