This brush is a cross between a regular brush and an “eternal” pen or ink liner. It is called the Water Brush or the Reservoir Brush. Model В Aquash, which is in the picture, is produced by the American company Pentel, but in general, many people produce such things. Brushes may differ in shape, size or feel when used, but the principle is the same for all: instead of a hard handle, there is a plastic screw-on water tank. The water seeps out slowly and the bristles of the brush are constantly wet or damp. By pressing the tank with different force, you can adjust the amount of water supplied.
This is a special brush for watercolor, it is used when working with watercolor paints and water-soluble pencils. It is especially convenient to take it on trips or in cafes – no jars of water are required, and you can fill the brush itself either in advance or from a bottle taken with you.

Using a water brush is easy. You can generally ignore the fact that there is water in the pen B (1 and 2), or you can blur the paint by clicking on the tank B (3 and 4):

A wet brush will take some color from dry paint B (1), a little more water B – more color B (2), a lot of water B – less saturated color B (3 and 4):

When used with watercolor pencils, remove color from them with a water brush:

Or you can blur the pencil right on the paper. From one stroke B (1) not all the paint has time to dissolve, a more saturated color will turn out if you brush several times B (2):

The water brush is very easy to clean, no additional water is required. First you need to remove excess paint with a napkin or a piece of cloth B (1), then press on the tank so that the bristles are saturated with water B (2), wipe again B (3) and repeat until the brush is clean B (4):

Industrial water brushes are made from synthetic bristles, are not easy to find commercially, and cost $5-$8 before shipping. Those who like the idea, but the availability and price are not very good, can, following the example of the artist Vera Kalinovskaya, make themselves a water brush with natural bristles on their own. To do this, you need to take a small plastic oiler for sewing machines, cut off its nose in half and put on a metal tip removed from the shaft with a kolinsky brush. It will turn out something like this:

Oil cans are suitable because they have such a spout system – when pressed, the contents are poured out in doses. The brushes are old style. They are easily separated from the shaft, and in them the hair is tied in a bun and filled with wax or paraffin in the metal. This composition must be pierced with a thick needle from the inside so that water, falling into the metal tube of the brush, wets the bristles. In modern brushes, the metal part is pressed into the shaft, and it is often filled with epoxy, which will not let water through to the bristles.

Like ordinary brushes, they come in different sizes and with a different hair bundle: sharp or rectangular.

You can paint with a water brush bright and pale, it all depends on you.
The most popular questions related to the water brush:
1. Will it leak in a bag?
No, the brush is tightly closed with a cap. Theoretically, it can only leak if you disassemble its body into two parts (as when filling with water) and put it in a bag like that.
2. I need pure colors, but the brush always has paint residue, because I can not wash it.
To do this, it is useful to keep a napkin handy. You need to clean the brush – swipe over the napkin several times until the mark is clean.
3. Where can I get such a thing?
In Europe, brushes are sold for about 7-9 euros apiece. One of the manufacturers is the well-known Koh-i-noor, remember the erasers with the elephant? 🙂 In company stores you can quite find water brushes. There are few brushes in Russia, but you can find them, for example, in Chernaya Rechka. The main search for the query “Watercolor brush with reservoir”. And get ready for the fact that in ordinary art stores, sellers will look at you strangely 🙂
On the Internet, you can easily find stores selling it by simply scoring waterbrush in the search.
4. Is watercolor painted with synthetic brushes?
And how!
5. Poorly squeezed out water. The brush is almost dry.
See if you have very little left. The brush draws best when it is fully loaded.
6. Why do you need such a device if there are ordinary comfortable brushes?
Then, so that you can carry it with you like a regular fountain pen and use it at any time. Try to do the same with ordinary brushes, without holding a pencil case, a supply of water and a container. Or imagine, you went on a trip, you have every thing on the account, otherwise the bag will become unbearable. What will you take: one water brush or a pencil case with ordinary brushes + a bottle of water?
7. Can I fill it with mascara or colored water.
Certainly!

The water brush can paint both pale and bright, it all depends on you. When mixing paints and applying to paper, a fairly pure tone is obtained, because the water is always supplied clean.
It usually looks like this.
1. We collect paint from a cuvette.
Stir on the palette (at the same time, water also gets on the palette and dilutes the paint)

AT 2. We apply paint to paper.

3. We continue until there is no paint left on the brush and just water will go. It turns out a smooth stretch. With ordinary brushes, water loves to end at the most unexpected moment, but not in this case 🙂

To clean the brush, it is enough to run it over a napkin several times – the excess paint will remain on the paper.
You can try filling the brush with diluted mascara. Or maybe water with the addition of watercolors. You can carry watercolor pencils with you and “take” color from them. Or blur them later. There are so many things you can do! Enough fantasy.
