But such a simple, at first glance, action can change your life. Psychologist Oksana Tumadin is sure of this. Art therapy helps to cope with depression and find peace of mind. Oksana, who calls herself an artist-psychologist, told how this happens.

<span style=""color:#0000cd;"">– Recently, art therapy has been widely used all over the world. Although many are sure that this is just fun, a game. No more. Is it so?

 – It is no coincidence that psychologists call art therapy a special psychotherapeutic method. We can say that it is at the intersection of science, entertainment and art. From each of these points, art therapy took something of its own. But to be more precise, in fact, art therapy is just a collective name for a huge number of psychological techniques associated with the manifestation of creativity in a person. Drawing, music, dancing, modeling, writing fairy tales – all these actions can rightfully be considered art therapy.

<span style=""color:#0000cd;"">– So where is art, where is science and where is entertainment?

 – Let’s start with the simplest. With entertainment. A man picked up an object with which you can fix any image on the surface, a very long time ago. Remember school history lessons, where we were told about the rock art of ancient people. But already at that time, our ancestors expressed with the help of drawings what worried them.

It could be hunting, wars with other tribes, the then ideas of man about his place in the universe. With the help of dance and music, ancient people could plunge into a special state resembling a trance.

It is difficult to argue with the fact that real works of art have an amazing effect on the state of mind of a person. Each of us at least once in our lives froze in a daze in front of a picture. Or felt that a piece of music literally turns the soul. But science is needed here in order to find the key that can help a person not only get pleasure, but also solve some internal problems.

<span style=""color:#0000cd;"">– So, an art therapy session is not just about drawing a picture or composing a melody?

 – All right. Art therapy has not only aesthetic, but also practical meaning. I will note right away that it does not matter at all whether a person knows how to draw, dance or sculpt. There are no usual criteria that apply to all works of art. But before a person takes part in the training, he must understand why he is doing it. Be sure to tune in and not wait for everything to happen by itself. Here the work of a person on himself is important.

<span style=""color:#0000cd;"">– What is the essence of this method?

 – Art therapy makes it possible to bring out those problems and complexes that are deeply hidden in a person. Moreover, this happens painlessly, a person does not have to break himself. Everything is natural. By the way, during the time that Santosh, my husband, and I have been conducting such psychological trainings, we have noticed that people usually come to art therapy when all other methods have been tried and have not given the desired result. In our classes, we use painting and drawings, so we can talk more about the essence of art therapy in this vein. The main value of art therapy is that a picture created by a person allows you to fix the internal state, makes it visual, primarily for himself. But for this to happen, it is necessary to go through the preparatory stage.

<span style=""color:#0000cd;"">– What is the preparation?

First, attitude. A person must understand why he came to an art therapy session. But even if this is not the case, then at the training itself he will definitely be drawn into the process. Simply because it is also very exciting. Secondly, you need to completely let go of yourself so that the actions are guided not by the mind, but by the subconscious. This is probably the hardest part. After all, we are used to controlling our actions in order to meet someone’s accepted standards. And here it is necessary to be completely liberated. It happens that this does not take more than one hour, depending on what baggage of problems the person came with.

<span style=""color:#0000cd;"">– And what happens after that?

 – After the preparatory stage, a person begins to splash out on paper everything that he has accumulated inside. People paint one picture for several hours. Layer after layer is applied to it, so that it dries out after a few days. At the same time, not only the momentary internal state of a person is reflected. A person is so permeated that all past experience, both negative and positive, is transferred to paper. The energy hidden in each of us breaks out through the hand that holds the brush or pencil. Art therapy teaches a person to accept himself as he is. Good, bad, imperfect, doing nasty things or, conversely, tolerating them from others. After all, if you are like that, you need to work with it, and not hide it.

All these moments are worked out during the session, and the person understands that he is the reason for everything that happens around him: work, friends, family. Having completed the work, a person looks at himself as if from the outside. And he is unlikely to return to the state in which he came. He doesn’t need it. It’s like a love story, which must completely exhaust itself so that there is no feeling of understatement, unexperienced. Then it only remains for me to slightly modify the drawing, to draw the images that have turned out. And sometimes this is not required.

<span style=""color:#0000cd;"">– How long does the effect of art therapy last?

 – It all depends on what problems the person came to the session with. And if everything is done correctly, then one picture is enough to feel how something in life has changed. But within a month it is still necessary to maintain the achieved effect. Here the emphasis is already on pronunciation of difficult moments. Therefore, in our methodology with Santosh, art therapy is just one of the moments, albeit the key ones. After all, a person must not only reflect on paper his emotions, experiences, hidden desires, but also understand them, analyze them.

<span style=""color:#0000cd;"">What can be achieved with art therapy?

 – The most important thing is that a person ceases to torment himself from the inside. After all, everything that bothered him in himself – here it is, on the canvas, it is tangible. So, you can abstract and learn to accept everything as it is easier. After all, we are what we have lived, we are our past, present and future. You don’t need to deny it, but you need to be able to accept it. And even if it was not always only good, but this is our experience. Why discard it? And it doesn’t matter at all what problem a person came with: disappointment in work, failures in his personal life, or a general rejection of his life. After all, it’s all interconnected. There will be personal happiness, interest in work will appear, a taste for the surrounding reality will be revived.

 – Who uses art therapy more often: men or women?

 – All-??? women. Probably, simply because it is easier for women to admit that they need professional psychological help. The stereotype that a man should not show emotions, especially in public, is very common. Men live with the idea that they must be strong. Although recently many men began to attend trainings. But they come already when they reach the last point, when absolutely nothing pleases them. At the same time, first of all, they say that the taste for work, for a career, has disappeared. And then it comes to women. Whereas for women, love comes first. And when personal life is getting better, they begin to think about work and career, they are interested in how to improve this side of life. Although from experience I can say that when a woman glows with happiness, she loves and is loved, then success in everything else comes by itself. There is a chain reaction.

– What else can art therapy give a person?

 – Art therapy helps a person to open up. We have already said that this, in addition to the therapeutic effect, is also an art. Manifesting his creativity (and it is in any of us), a person receives incomparable pleasure. This is the joy of creation. Drawing, you disconnect from everyday worries and problems. But this is already a lot, given the modern pace of life. Working with paints makes a person happier. Remember how much fun you got as a child when you depicted mom, dad and yourself on paper. So here.

 – Oksana, how did you come to art therapy yourself?

 – It was an inner desire. I just wanted to take a brush in my hand and start painting. And this desire has not gone away so far. And only then I realized that art therapy can be useful not only for me personally, but also for other people. And I really appreciate the people who come to me for sessions, because, thanks to them, I myself comprehend something new.

A series of messages ” Advice for all occasions “:
Part 1 – Helpful Hints: Tie my tie, honey!
Part 2 – For the first time abroad (Tips for first-time travelers)
…
Part 24 – Signs and superstition
Part 25 – Hypnosis: how not to become a victim of scammers?
Part 26 – Art Therapy: Draw Your Life
Part 27 – How to protect yourself from other people’s influence
Part 28 – How to look chic without expensive makeup
…
Part 36 – How to forget unhappy love?
Part 37 – Natalia Pravdina: Effective steps to raise money
Part 38 – Applied instruction for life.
